Because Jesus was the Son of David he was recognized as the Messiah, the Christ. Looking back on his life, the genealogies of Matthew and Luke and St. Paul stress this. However, the people who acknowledged it during his ministry were surprising. Two blind men followed him, crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” It was the blind who could really see who Jesus was! That serves as a reminder that being people of faith is not limited to church-y people or scholars. Every believer connects with God in their own way. John Henry Newman wrote a book entitled “On Consulting the Laity on Matters of Doctrine.” The laity, people of faith, are the ones who can truly see who Jesus is.
