Mountains are holy places in the Bible. Abraham led Isaac up Mount Moriah for the sacrifice. God gave Moses the law on Mount Sinai. Elijah confronted the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel. Jesus have his great sermon “on the Mount.” He was transfigured on Mount Tabor, crucified on Mount Calvary and ascended from the Mount of Olives. No surprise that Jesus provides healing and multiplies the loaves and fishes on a mountain (Mt 15:29). Isaiah’s vision that “the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces” takes place on a mountain — but not just any mountain but “on this mountain.” The “this-ness” of his vision we need to take to heart — right here we can live in God’s grace, mercy, love, forgiveness.
