The prophet Isaiah said, “the LORD is an eternal Rock.” Jesus said, “be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” Why a rock? Have you ever walked along the ocean at low tide? Frequently you will come across families building elaborate castles in the sand: turrets, moats, towers, bulwarks. Very impressive. Walking a little farther you might come across a boulder cast up by the sea — just there, drab and uninteresting. Walk along at high tide and the best designed sand castle will be washed away but the boulder, the rock, will still be there as the waves wash against it. Our faith is more like that rock — simply trusting in God’s fidelity in all things — than it is a fancy edifice.
