Today we reflect upon what it means to believe. Two blind men approached Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel and asked for healing. Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him. Contrast that with the scene where a father approaches Jesus for cure for his child. Jesus challenges him that all things are possible for one who believes. The father responds: “I do believe. Help my unbelief” (Mark 9:25). I find that to be much more genuine than the absolute statement of the blind men. Faith is not like knowing that two plus two equals four. Faith is like jumping out of an airplane and trusting that your parachute will open. Faith is throwing ourselves into God’s arms.
