Since today’s feast of the Immaculate Conception is not mentioned in Scripture the readings for today serve more as commentary, a reflection on the meaning of the feast. The key can be found in the epistle. In Christ we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will. Mary was chosen to be “full of grace” and destined to bring God into the world. Of course, St. Paul is not talking specifically about Mary as chosen and destined — he is referring to all believers. Mary is the pre-eminent example for all Christians — beloved of God from the first moment of our existence commissioned to bring God-with-us into the world.
