When King Solomon dedicated the temple in Jerusalem he wondered: “Can it indeed be that God dwells on earth?” Of course, not. On the other hand, there are spaces that lift our minds and hearts to God. When I visited Muir Woods I started speaking in whispers — the trees created an atmosphere of reverence. While we know that God is beyond anything in creation, as bodies we find that there are some places that resonate with who we are and seem holier than others. We are called to, on the one hand, find (or create) those spaces which speak to us of the sacred while at the same time realize that all our lives we are moving from one piece of holy ground to another.
