The LORD God said: “See! The man has become like one of us, knowing what is good and what is evil! This pronouncement in the Book of Genesis after the sin of Adam and Eve foreshadows a conflict between God and humanity. This conflict is symbolized at the Tower of Babel where human beings are portrayed as seeking to have divine power. Humanity needed to be put in its place. By contrast, Jesus invites us to become like God — not in seeking power but in exhibiting divine compassion since we are children of God. “My heart is moved with pity for the crowd,” Jesus said. We are called to see the world as Jesus sees it — a place in need of generosity, forgiveness and love.
