St. Mark’s gospel portrays the disciples of Jesus as particularly dense. Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember? But the Evangelist is not picking on them as a group but using them to stand in for all of us. Mark is challenging us: What are we not seeing, or hearing or remembering? When we look around we can see that God has built a rhythm into life with the dead of winter giving way to the new life in the Spring. We should not get discouraged when things seem dire because God has not finished. We must hear the words of Jesus “God is love and whoever abides in love abides in God and God in them.” We must remember that Good Friday does not get the last word for resurrection is coming.
