During Ordinary Time the scripture readings are what is called a “continuous reading,” a lectio continua. We start reading from a book of the bible for the first reading and from one of the four gospels and just go through them chapter by chapter. During Lent the first and second reading are chosen to comment on each other. Today the Old Testament lesson has this word from Moses: Choose Life. In the gospel of Luke Jesus says, Take up your cross daily and follow me … for whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. So lesson seems to be — the way to choose life is to choose the cross. We choose the cross whenever we follow God wherever God is leading us.
