The readings during the season of Lent are particular for each day. (In Ordinary Time particular books of the Bible are chosen and read chapter by chapter.) The two readings complement each other. Today, in the Book of Deuteronomy we read: Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD, your God. In the gospel of Luke: Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. Reading both texts proves that “choosing life” is not about choosing something which will benefit only me, will enhance my prosperity. Rather to choose life requires that we see the big picture of life which includes not simply me but the whole human race, the health of our planet, and even eternal life toward which we destined. We must look on all of life as God does, worthy of care and attention.
