At one time or another most of us have probably echoed the words of the father of the epileptic boy in our prayer: “I do believe, help my unbelief!” I do believe that God has a plan for this world but when I see war, poverty, racism, hatred I need God’s grace to help me over my unbelief. I do believe the Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church but when I see rigidity, patriarchy, clericalism, politics in the Church I need God’s grace to help my unbelief. I do believe that my family is guarded in the palm of God’s hand but when I see them drifting away from their upbringing I need God’s grace to help my unbelief. There is a gap between what our head knows and what our heart feels. That is why Jesus urges his followers to prayer. Prayer closes the gap!
