Pope Francis reminded the Church that we are “missionary disciples.” The founder of my religious congregation, Fr. Judge, said “Every Catholic is called to be an apostle.” Two ways of saying that the faith is not simply a possession we hold onto but something meant for everyone, something to be shared. The prophet Isaiah tells us that the way to share the faith is not with improved catechetical techniques or better promotion. “If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness.” The best way to share the faith is to live the faith, to show by our lives what it means to be a people of God. People will be attracted to faith when they see in believers the kindness, benevolence and charity which come from God. We let our little light shine by helping this world to look just a little more like the kingdom of peace and justice that God designed it to be.
