“Stop judging and you will not be judged.” These words of Jesus are a challenge and a source of confusion. They are a confusing because we are making judgments all the time. If fact, you might say that judging is what makes us human. The shark does not judge whether biting the surfer’s leg is moral or not but we must make judgments all the time if something is good or bad. Someone who can’t make such judgments has a species of mental illness. But it is a challenge because what we can’t do is make judgments about is whether another person is good or bad. We have no way of knowing that they are going through and how they came up with whatever action that took. We can judge the action good or bad, but we can’t judge the person good or bad. That is in God’s hands.
