“For whoever is not against us is for us.” David Brooks, the New York Times columnist, wrote recently of his spiritual journey. Jewish by heritage but non-practicing, as he aged and saw the situation in the world today he started looking for an anchor, a set of values to help him make sense of things and of his place in the world. Along the way of spiritual journeying, he was led to the life and teachings of Jesus. He enthused that the life in God that Jesus holds out to us offers the best hope for a truly human life and a humane society. One friend commented, “It sounds like you have joined the Jesus team.” Brooks was not prepared to go that far but he admitted that the Christian life was attractive. Maybe what this says about our modern, skeptical world is that we should be inviting people to live a life of compassion, forgiveness, generosity, kindness before insisting that they join the “Jesus team.”
