Today you are making this agreement with the LORD: he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways … And today the LORD is making this agreement with you: you are to be a people peculiarly his own. A consistent theme in the Hebrew Scriptures is the “agreement,” the covenant, that God has with us. Being the people of God is not forced upon us but we are invited into the relationship. Jesus tells us what our part of the agreement is: love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you. The only way we will get beyond the current deep divisions in society is to learn to see others as God sees them as children of your heavenly Father.
