You have not approached a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them. This description from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds me of The Wizard of Oz. He kept power by intimidating those around him. In contrast, Jesus sends out his disciples without any pomp and circumstance, just seeking a simple human encounter. He sends them out two by two because having a companion not only provides support but also challenges the illusions we have about ourselves. Two people inevitably will rub against each other and the witness of their willingness to forgive and accept each other is part of the mission.
