One of the cautionary tales of the Bible concerns Lot’s wife. She “looked back” and was turned into a pillar of salt. Looking back can fill us with fear and anxiety as we notice all of the mistakes and troubles which litter our story. The Epistle to the Hebrews says to look forward. “Let us persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” We fix our eyes of Jesus because of our confidence that his grace and power can make a way out of no way. The hemorrhagic woman and Jairus are described as full of fear. Jesus said “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” Focusing on Jesus drives away all fear fills us with confidence.
