My guess is the disciples were really happy when Jesus said it was time for a vacation. “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” My guess is they were really disappointed when the crowds showed up and caring for them ruined their time away. Every parent can relate to the thought “but haven’t I done enough. Don’t I deserve a break?” But no break comes because of the demands of the children. There is a scene in the play Man for All Seasons where Thomas More is confronted by his daughter. “Haven’t you done as much as God can reasonably want?” To which More answered: “Well… finally… it isn’t a matter of reason; finally it’s a matter of love.”
