The story of creation in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis stresses that God created everything and that everything God created is good. “God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good.” The author sought to counteract the temptation to imagine that there are two forces — one good and one evil — battling for control. This temptation is common because looking around we can easily find the presence of evil. (Genesis deals with that phenomenon in the Adam and Eve story.) But the creation story is designed to reassure us — no matter how things seem to be going, God is in charge. We need not fear the force of evil because it is, literally, no-thing in comparison with God’s love.
