In the first chapter of Genesis God creates with just a word. “God said, ‘Let there be light” and there was light.” In the second chapter God is much more involved in the work of creation — literally getting the divine hands dirty. God is portrayed as a gardener, a workman toiling to make creation come alive. In particular God mingles dirt and divinity in creating the first man, Adam. “God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life.” It is easy to notice the “dirty” parts of ourselves — “the evils that come from within” a human being as Jesus put it. But we should never forget that we also breathing the very breath of God.
