The apostles came back tired from their missionary journey so Jesus said to them, Let’s go on vacation. St. Mark says, “They went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.” I’m sure they were looking forward to some “me” time. However, people got to their get away place ahead of them. When Jesus “saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he began to teach them many things.” My guess is that the twelve minded that their vacation was cancelled because of those needy people. But any mother can tell you that a crying child trumps “me” time. We need to develop a heart like Jesus that is moved with pity when we see someone hurting.
