The creation story in Genesis 1 culminates in the creation of humanity. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over … all the creatures.” There is a great discussion currently in theological circles over what having “dominion” over creation means. Some have used that idea to say that humanity can exploit creation, can use up the natural and animal resources for the benefit of our species. However, a closer look at the text suggests that human dominion over creation is modeled on God’s dominion. God takes care of creation and give of Godself for it instead of taking from it. Since humanity is made in God’s image we should likewise be wise stewards of creation.
