A few years ago there was a bumper sticker: Women belong in the House …. and in the Senate. We in Western Civilization are just now catching up to the radical equality the book of Genesis envisions for humanity. At the creation of women the first man said: “This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called ‘woman.‘” Society still today is trying to catch up to this Edenic ideal of the relationship of men and women being one of equality. And not just between the sexes, every race, every culture, every people are equal in the eyes of God. Even Jesus had to learn that lesson when the Syrophoenician (that is to say non-Jewish) woman confronted him. She pushed him to see things with fresh eyes. Sometimes we also need to be pushed to get over our cultural stereotypes. As another bumper sticker put it: well-behaved women seldom make history.
