It’s not that big a deal to believe in God. The evil spirits believe in God. When Jesus was driving out an unclean spirit it cried out: “I know who you are–the Holy One of God!” So believing in God does not produce salvation. What is difficult is believing that God lives in our midst, among the people woven into our lives. We all too easily notice how fallible, how feeble, how fearful other people are. Yes, we are a mess. But we are also blessed. According to the epistle to the Hebrews, Jesus, the Son of God “is not ashamed to call them brothers” and sisters. We need to have eyes that recognize in our brothers and sisters the spark of God’s presence.
