Saul’s father sent him out to look for asses who had wandered off. Being a dutiful son he did his assigned chore. Instead of finding the asses, he found a prophet, Samuel, who, in response to a revelation from God, anointed him as “commander over his heritage.” That is the way the will of God works most often. We go about the business of everyday life and God intervenes and asks something of us. “She is grieving; give her a call.” “You have some time, why not volunteer.” “Shouldn’t you forgive him?” We don’t need to look in exotic places to find our role in bringing God into the world. If we are faithful in the tasks of life, God will show open a door.
