The story of the call of the young boy Samuel serves as a reminder of how God operates in our life. According to the Biblical account Samuel heard the voice of the Lord but at that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD. He had to learn how to recognize what God was saying to him. Notice that Samuel kept at it — he didn’t throw up his hands in frustration when he wasn’t able to discern the God’s message. He had a mentor, a spiritual director, to guide him on how to act. And we was open to whatever God would say to him. “Speak, for your servant is listening.” Three steps: perseverance, guidance, openness are what equip us to hear God as well.
