The Bible readings for today are both about a call. Saul is called to become the king of Israel. The LORD has anointed you commander over his heritage. Levi is called to become a disciple. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed Jesus. In both cases the call came as something of a surprise. Saul was out hunting for asses and Levi was in the money-making business. God broke into their lives and set them on a new course. Something that dramatic might not happen to us but we are all called out of our comfort zone time and again. We must be alert for the divine intervention which comes to us in the voice of a relative, neighbor, friend.
