In ordinary time we read the books of the Bible chapter by chapter. The gospels leading up to Lent the year are from the Gospel of Mark. The epistle for the next month is the Letter to the Hebrews. We don’t know the origin or the author of this document. Examining its content suggests that the letter was written to encourage Christians who have lost the initial enthusiasm of a new convert. The letter does this by reminding the reader (including us) that we find God best in our humanity. Jesus “had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way” in order to show us that the ordinary stuff of life, the pots and pans, are the place where God can be found.
