Often in the Bible there is a refrain similar to the one that David issued to Goliath: “Today the LORD shall deliver you into my hand.” He hear things like: the battle is the Lord’s, the Lord gives the victory, trust not in horses but in the Lord. Even though David trusted that God would deliver him, he still picked up five smooth stones! So with us — in faith we trust in the power of God to save. But we need our own version of “smooth stones” to cooperate with God’s grace. For example, we trust that the Lord can save us when we are sick — but we need the “smooth stone” of the care of a doctor as the instrument of God’s deliverance.
