Have you never read what David did? Jesus remembered King David as an example to guide his actions. David had lived 1000 years before the time of Christ. (Can you think of anyone from 1022 who serves as a model for you?) That historical memory gave the people of Jesus’ time hope that just as God had acted on Israel’s behalf in the past, he would do so again. (Archeological footnote: in 1993 a memorial stone was found naming King Joram as of the “house of David,” the first non-Biblical reference to David ever discovered.) In prayer it behooves us to remember those whose lives and actions provide an example of how God raises up people to help make this world a more just and peaceful place.
