Samuel anointed David and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him. While Saul seemed to possess all the qualities you need in a king, he was cast aside. David, despite being too young at this point and as the story unfolds too ready to forget his responsibilities, is chosen to succeed Saul because he meets the ancient pattern of charismatic leader, being filled with the Spirit of the Lord. What David did have was an awareness that he was loved by God and a desire to return that love. A good reminder for us — we might not possess all the qualities which should characterize a Christian but when we let God love and love in return we end up right.
