There was a Godzilla movie a few years ago that had as its tag line “size matters.” We are tempted to think that bigger is better. The story of David and Goliath rebuts that thinking. Goliath had the size but it didn’t matter. What mattered was David’s reliance on God. “I come against you in the name of the LORD of hosts,” said David and thus he prevailed. During Catholic Schools week the Archdiocese of Chicago was bragging about the size of its system: 78,000 students in 217 schools! If size is what matters than it is a tragedy when a school closes. On the other hand, if what matters is reliance on God than we must trust God is leading us even in difficult decisions.
