The king and his men set out for Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the region… David did take the stronghold of Zion, which is the City of David. It was a brilliant tactical move on David’s part to make Jersusalem his capital. The city had not been part of any of the twelve tribes territory since it was occupied by the Jebusites. By conquering it David demonstrated that he was not simply a tribal chief for Judah but ruler of all the tribes from this neutral site. There is a constant temptation in human life to be “tribal,” to care for the people you consider “one of our own.” Like David we must act as if there isn’t anyone out there who isn’t one of our own, that we are all children of God, part of the family of God. Racial, ethnic, national or sectional differences tends to divide us into tribes. God’s grace makes us all part of the one tribe of God’s people.
