Yesterday there was a news item about a doctor in Michigan who had been in the USA for forty years and was arrested by the immigration service. He was threatened with deportation because of a shop-lifting conviction when he was a teen. This absurd application of the law is all too frequent in today’s environment. This caught my eye because the doctor’s name was the same as my mother’s not-very-common maiden name. Instead of it just being another case, I felt connected to this one. When Jesus says in the gospel, “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother,” he wants us to understand that there isn’t anyone out there that we are not connected with. We’re all children of God.
