David felt pretty good about himself. He had conquered his enemies, he had established his capital, he resided in a palace. So he told the prophet Nathan he was going to do something for God. He was going to give God a house. The prophetic message he gets in return rebuked that idea. God told David, everything you have accomplished, everything you have done, has only happened because of my grace and my strength. You can’t build me a house but I can build you a house. The message to King David is directed to us as well. Anything that we do does not come about because of our efforts, our will but because of God’s gift. God does for us, not vice versa.
