According to the latest survey about 28% of U.S. adults are religiously unaffiliated, what demographers call the “nones.” This is more than the number of Catholics or the number of evangelicals. And the number is growing rapidly since the largest segment with no religious affilication are the youngest cohort — more than one third. This runs contrary to the history of Christianity where the faith was handed on almost as a family legacy from the very beginning. St. Paul writes to Timothy: I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you. Even in New Testament times there were generations of Christians. We should follow the Jesus model in responding to this situation by planting a seed. “This is how it is with the Kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed.” We scatter seeds of compassion, forgiveness, charity, acceptance and count on God to give the growth.
