For this city boy who grew up in a row home in Baltimore living next to a farm has been a revelation. You put a seed in the ground and with just sun and water added pretty soon you have an eight-foot tall sunflower smiling at you. Jesus was from a rural environment and he saw in the cycle of nature signs of God’s presence. If a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit. We are so accustomed to seeing this happen that the miracle of it eludes us. Jesus plucked such images from nature to demonstrate how close God is to us, that a hundred million miracles are happening every day (according to Oscar Hammerstein!) Today let’s keep alert to recognize the presence of God in the everyday.
