After Jesus had cured the man possessed by demons he told him: “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him. Becoming “missionary disciples” is the challenge Pope Francis has extended to the Church. We can no longer be content to have the faith. We must also share the faith. By its very nature the faith is something too precious to hoard. All too often people can feel intimated by that challenge. Who am I to share the faith? I’m not all that great a Christian myself! That Jesus would commission a demon-possessed individual to become a missionary disciple tells us that the only credential that is necessary is an awareness of how God has blessed and is blessing us.
