Since by definition an apostle is someone who is sent, the first apostle was a crazy man. Mark’s gospel tells the story of Jesus curing the wild man of the Gerasenes who lived “among the tombs and on the hillsides, always crying out and bruising himself with stones.” After the encounter with Jesus the man pleaded to remain with Jesus. Instead, Jesus sends him out in mission: “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” All of which serves to remind us that each Christian has an apostolic vocation. Mission territory is not in some exotic locale but at home and among our families. Let us this day share with them good news.
