Pope Francis has reminded us that as Christians we are called to be missionary disciples. The founder of my congregation, Fr. Thomas Judge, said something similar when he adopted the motto “every Catholic is called to be an apostle.” That can sound kind of intimidating — where and how are we supposed to be missionaries, apostles? Jesus gives one possible answer talking to the man he cured: “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” As Father Judge put it, the missionary vocation that we all share comes “in the providence of everyday life.” Our homes, families, work places, schools, gyms provide the occasion for us to bring the message of God’s love.
