As St. John tells the story, John the Baptist introduced Andrew to Jesus and Andrew introduced his brother Simon, re-named Peter, to Jesus. A good model of evangelization — no fancy programs just one person inviting another to “come and see.” But what about the other guy? Andrew was not alone in going to see Jesus. “The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.” We never hear about the other guy again. Did he continue to follow Jesus? Did he go back as a disciple of John the Baptist? This serves as an important reminder that we should not measure success in evangelization by numbers. We can do the inviting and provide a place of hospitality and welcome but God gives the growth.
