Perhaps the perfect metaphor for our contemporary culture is the “selfie.” No matter what is going on I want to be in the picture. However, that is not the way the Bible looks at things. Our focus should not be on our selves but on the other. Ask any parent and they will tell you that the real meaning of love is not found in how I feel but in taking care of the beloved who has come into my life. That is how St. John understood the Pascal Mystery: “The way we came to know love was that Jesus laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” It truly is not about me.
