The last words spoken by Mary in the gospels are in St. John: “Do whatever he tells you.” The scene is the wedding at Cana and Jesus has basically told his mother to stop bothering him. She ignores the seeming rebuke and presumes that the son she knew to be full of compassion would help the newly weds. In our own life of prayer we can feel that God is ignoring us or not paying much attention to our concerns. At those times we need to heed the words of Mary and do whatever Jesus tells us. Forgive, be charitable, do to the least of our brothers and sisters and soon we will find that God will answer our prayer in unexpected ways.
