We all today probably did some soul searching on how we are to respond to the anarchy manifest in our country. The story of the inauguration of the public ministry of Jesus in his home town of Nazareth might provide a model. He used as his “mission statement” the passage for Isaiah: the Spirit of the Lord is upon me … to bring glad tidings to the poor…” Jesus was not concerned with “churchy” things like the catechism and getting people baptized. His mission was to bring good news to the poor, freedom to those trapped, insight to those unable to see, liberation to the oppressed. If we as a church imitate the mission of Jesus the world will become closer to the kingdom of God.
