Isaiah, like the prophets before him, is more concerned about how the faith of Israel is lived out then about religious observence. Trample my courts no more! Bring no more worthless offerings; … cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow. The Church today has put an emphasis on evangelization — spreading the good news. This is, of course, what Jesus was all about. The danger, though, is supposing that successful evangelizaton means more bodies in church. The prophetic tradition which Jesus shared in was about changing the world into a more just and peaceful place — what he called the “kingdom of God.” Church-going is a means to get to that kingdom.
