I met some members of the “emerging new forms of religious life” once. They were monastic but unlike monks in the past they put their foundations in the midst of the city. Their intention was to create ripples of Godliness that would impact the neighborhood and create a counter-narrative to the bad news of violence and crime that one hears so often about a city. Abraham seemed to have a similar attitude toward Sodom. If he could find just ten good people that would be enough to save the city. Goodness is more powerful than evil. If we but recognize the force of goodness we won’t be discouraged when we hear the “bad news” but instead trust that we can hang it there with God.
