God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a burnt offering.” The story of Abraham on Mount Moriah has produced a great deal of reflection among religious people. For the Jews, the story is known as the “binding of Isaac” and symbolizes the faith that Abraham had in God. For Christians, the story usually is called “the sacrifice of Abraham” and has been seen as a precursor to the death and resurrection of Jesus. In Islam it is simply called “the binding” because most scholars presume that the son who was bound was Ishmael, not Isaac, and it epitomizes the importance of complete submission to God’s will.
