We read from the Book of Exodus for the next few weeks. It begins reminding us of the human ability to find any excuse to do what we want to do. The Hebrew children had come to Egypt as refugees but pharaoh needed workers so he justified enslaving them for some bogus reason. “In time of war they too may join our enemies to fight against us, and so leave our country.” In this country those holding slaves justified their actions by appealing to the Bible. If we are to avoid such self-deception in our own lives we must reverse the process — instead of deciding what we want to do and then justifying it, we must seek God’s will first to determine what to do.
