One of the undercurrents in contemporary thinking is speciesism. According to the dictionary “Speciesism is the idea that being human is a good enough reason for human animals to have greater moral rights than non-human animals.” Contrast that with the teaching of Jesus: “So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” So the Bible does think that human beings are of more worth, have more value than animals. As humans we are made in the image and likeness of God and have an eternal destiny. For that reason every human being — the handicapped, the unborn, even those who have committed terrible crimes — must be treated with dignity and respect. Humanity must treat animals with care but not as of equal value.
