In Jerusalem the Yad Vashem Museum memorializes the victims of the Holocaust. Part of the museum is dedicated to the “righteous of the nations” — those non-Jews who resisted the Shoah and helped their Jewish neighbors escape destruction. Even in those dark times there were small flickers of light. Exodus reports an earlier holocaust against the Jews but even then there was a spark of hope. On seeing the threatened baby boy Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the river, was moved with pity for him and said, “It is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Moses, and ultimately the Hebrew people, were saved by her kindness. In our dark times we can’t fix everything but we can do something to bring light into the world.
